Expert Advice : How Can You Pass Your MOT Test

While many people will tell you that passing the MOT is a piece of cake, it’s actually not that easy. Most people fail their MOTs due to small, insignificant things that they overlook. But to pass the MOT, it’s important that you know your vehicle thoroughly. Driving in heavy traffic in cities like London and Scotland can be a bit confusing if you’re not used to it. You need to drive on the left side and there are some traffic vocabulary and rules that are different from other countries. So, it may take you some time to understand these rules. Once your car is over 3 years old, you will need an annual MOT test. After passing the first test, you should renew it every year. Renew & book your car’s MOT at any Fife Autocentre branch in your area. But before you go for your MOT, here are a few checks you can do yourself.

Check Your Tyres and Lights

When it comes to MOT, there are so many things that you need to check first. For any car’s MOT, first and foremost, you need to check the tyres and lights. Make sure the tyres are full and there’s no outward damage. Ensure that the tyres are of the right shape and size. The tread depth of your tyre should be minimum 1.66mm across the pattern of the wheel. Also make sure that the tyres of your car are standard wheels and not spare tyres. For lights, check the color of the lights and their condition. Make sure they work properly and don’t flicker.

Ensure Number Plates are Easy to Read

Another important thing to check is the number plate. Number plates are, in a way, the identity of the vehicle. So, it’s important that the plates are secured to the car, clearly visible, and easy to read. There are also rules regarding which fonts are permitted, but you can check the government website for such details.

Check the Windscreen and Wipers

Next, you need to check the Windscreen and Wipers. Make sure that the windscreen and wipers work efficiently and give you a clear view of the road. If you find that some wipers are worn out, replace them. And, if you notice any chips or cracks in the screen bigger than a 5p coin, you should get it repaired. Keep your windscreen washer stocked and unblock the jets in the washer if necessary. This is a simple fix which you can do at home with a fine pin. Such small checks and fixes are often overlooked and make you fail the test!

Test the Horn and Seatbelts for Damage

Another important check is to test the horn. Make sure it’s working properly. You also need to check the seatbelts for any damage or issues. Another thing to consider checking is the seats and doors. Make sure all the doors are working properly too.

There are many more interior and exterior checks for your car if you want to pass the MOT. While these small checks may seem insignificant, they are the difference between failing and passing the MOT. Make a checklist of all the things you need to check in your car before the MOT so that you’re well-prepared when it matters.
