Whether you’ve always loved trying new makeup or have recently discovered your hidden talent, becoming a makeup artist might be right for you. This industry, which once was owned by only the top celebrity artists, has seen an explosion in new, top-tier talent. In fact, some of the best of the best never stepped foot inside a cosmetology school. They were all self-taught, and made a name for themselves on social media. That said, even if you have a keen eye for detail, there are still a series of steps most people go through to become accredited in the business. If you’re ready to take the next step in this booming industry, here’s the best way to do it.

Even if you already have an online following or have worked in the field before you need the right tools to keep growing. Specifically, you need the have high-quality tools to practice with in and out of school. There’s no shortage of reputable cosmetology schools you can attend to learn from the best. Attendance can add up quick, so unless you’ve been saving up, private student loans might be the way to go. Once approved, you can use the money to cover the cost of the program and makeup applicators and tools that are required. Since it’s a private loan, you can tailor the terms to your personal needs.

Start Building a Portfolio

One of the best ways to showcase your skills is by building a portfolio. Whether it’s a paid job or you enlist the help of friends and family, create a portfolio that highlights your abilities. It’s a good idea to include a variety of samples, so be sure to add at least one glamorous session and one natural looking, no makeup look. Granted, starting a portfolio isn’t exactly free. You’re going to need money before you can do anything. There’s no better way to do so than by taking out a personal loan. A personal loan can be put toward pretty much anything, including investments to help get your portfolio set up for success.

Get Social

Social media is probably the fastest, not to mention the easiest, I route to free self-promotion. You can use Instagram to show before and after’s, TikTok for how-to sessions, and YouTube as a portal for others to learn from you.

Learn New Trends

Just like fashion, there are always new beauty trends emerging. It’s important to stay informed and learn use them to your advantage. In addition to following beauty publications, be sure you’re following the most popular beauty artists on social. They too have accounts on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. These trends can change quickly too. One day clients might be after a natural makeup look and the next high drama lips could be trending, so it’s important to stay current in a timely fashion.

Network in Your Niche

Similar to other business niches, you also need to network. Look for meet-ups in person and online, and other organized events. Oftentimes, stores like Sephora and Ulta host events that are actually sponsored by leaders in the industry.

Get Licensed

You also need to check out your state’s licensing requirements. Most cosmetology licensees require a set number of educational hours, which are supplemented by hands-on training. Afterwards, you can look for internships where you can either continue to grow your portfolio, or possibly work your way up within a company. The most important thing to remember is that everyone has to start at the bottom. So, don’t get discouraged if you don’t land your dream job right away.
